Obituary for Michael Halliday

Attorney Michael Halliday, 91, formerly of 293 Clinton St. Greenville, PA, passed away Monday morning, December 31, 2018 at Saint John XXIII Home in Hermitage, PA.

Attorney Halliday was born November 2, 1927, and grew up in the Shenango Valley. He served 2 years in the US Army during relative peacetime in Korea, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Youngstown State University, and attended the University of Pittsburgh Law School where he received his Juris Doctorate.

On February 4, 1950, he married his wife Marie, and in 1953, he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar Association and licensed to practice law. Then, through either wisdom, luck, or God’s grace, they chose to move to what would become their beloved home of Greenville, Pennsylvania.

He loved the practice of law and was a good, tough, generous and successful attorney.

He taught Sunday school at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, served as Borough Solicitor for many years, taught Business Law at Thiel College for 17 years while donating his salary, sponsored a Little League baseball team and was involved in many other organizations and activities. Besides the practice of law, he had many business interests in Greenville and beyond including ownership of The Hotel William Baker in The Chautauqua Institution and The Riverside Inn at Cambridge Springs which he and his wife owned and operated from 1985 until May 2, 2017 when the Inn was destroyed by fire.

Of humble origins and challenging circumstances, he was known for his vision, humor, and zest for life while being extraordinarily charitable. He was interested in everything. An avid skier, golfer, and fisherman, he loved life, his family, his friends, and his community.

He is survived by his wife of over 68 years, Marie, his daughter Hannah Martel of Florida, his granddaughter Juliette, and his son, Michael Jay, of New York.

After a full life and a long illness, may he Rest In Peace.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 4th, from 9:30 am - 10:45 am in the library at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, One Trinity Place, Greenville. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 in the church sanctuary, with the church's pastor, Rev. Brenda Martin, officiating. The urn will be placed in the church columbarium during the service.
